"Working with students one-on-one is a luxury for teachers. Our program gives us this
opportunity and we are able to provide reading intervention effectively. We have a great time building relationships with our students."

Reading Adventure Program

Apple Ridge Farm extends its programs throughout the school year with the Reading Adventure Program held at the Melrose and Gainsboro branches of the Roanoke City Public Library, Lucy Addison Middle School, Fallon Park Elementary School and Forest Park Magnet Elementary School.   Reading Adventure is an after-school tutoring program that offers both individualized reading instruction and homework assistance.   Academic focus is on developing reading skills using a directed reading system published by Project Read, called Language Circle.   This system stresses phonics skills through an explicit, systematic program.   Children will benefit from improved reading skills which enhance all academic areas, and lead to increased ability to succeed in and out of school.

Students come to their tutoring sessions twice a week for two hours.  They meet with their reading teacher for one-on-one tutoring and receive homework assistance from the assistant teacher.   Students work individually and in groups, and they are expected to demonstrate respect for their teachers, parents, selves and peers. In addition, the “Apple Ridge School of Tennis” may be offered two afternoons a week during the school year and everyday, Monday through Friday, during summer camp sessions.

In order to be enrolled in the program, parents and students must complete an application, provide a teacher referral, and sign contracts that detail expectations.  Parents are asked to  commit to supporting the program through two hours of volunteer work each month.  Volunteer opportunities all center around developing family literacy and supporting students in their education.  For example, a parent might attend PTA meetings, create materials for the Reading Adventure Program, or take a class to further his or her education in order to satisfy volunteer requirements.

Three family dinners are hosted through the year to keep communications lines open and to celebrate the successes of students.  These dinners emphasize the Reading Adventure Program’s mission of literacy and celebrate the role and importance of the family in the education of their children.
